DKW
youtube

In 1930 the DKW was the largest motorcycle factory in the world, in 1932 it joined Audi, Wanderer and Horch, creating the Auto Union. The unmistakable feature of the Luxus was the bright red tank. The engine of this 1931 model, a fan-cooled two-stroke engine, was equipped with a two-speed gearbox. As soon as DKW was able to switch to the production of pressed steel frames, the first motorcycle to fit one was the Luxus. The displacement differences are due to the different circulation taxes in force in the countries where the Luxus was exported.

About DKW

DKW was a German car and motorcycle marque. DKW was one of the four companies that formed Auto Union in 1932 and thus became an ancestor of the modern-day Audi company. In 1916, Danish engineer Jørgen Skafte Rasmussen founded a factory in Zschopau, Saxony, Germany, to produce steam fittings. A Glimpse into Automotive History: The 1931 [DKW](/artist/dkw) Luxus

The 1931 DKW Luxus is a fascinating piece of automotive history, and the footage of this vintage vehicle is a rare treat for enthusiasts and historians alike. At just over one minute long, the clip provides a brief yet captivating look at the design, features, and engineering of this early German motorcycle.

One of the most striking aspects of the DKW Luxus is its distinctive bright red tank, which has become an unmistakable feature of the vehicle's identity. This bold color choice was likely intended to make the bike stand out on the road, but it also serves as a visual reminder of the car's rich history and heritage.

The 1931 model year marks an important milestone in the development of the DKW Luxus, as it was one of the first motorcycles to feature a pressed steel frame. This innovative design allowed for greater durability and stability, making the bike more suitable for long-distance travel. The use of pressed steel frames also paved the way for future developments in motorcycle engineering.

The engine of the 1931 DKW Luxus is another notable aspect of its design. A fan-cooled two-stroke engine equipped with a two-speed gearbox provides a unique combination of power and efficiency. Two-stroke engines were common during this period, but the use of a two-speed gearbox was a relatively advanced feature for motorcycles at the time.

The DKW Luxus's connection to the modern-day Audi company is also worth highlighting. As one of the four companies that formed Auto Union in 1932, DKW played a significant role in shaping the automotive industry in Germany during the early 20th century. The Luxus model was just one part of this larger narrative, and its design and engineering reflect the innovative spirit and attention to detail that characterized the era.

The clip's mention of circulation taxes also provides an interesting glimpse into the regulatory environment of the time. The displacement differences between models sold in different countries were likely a result of tax laws and regulations, which varied from place to place. This highlights the complex interplay between economic, social, and technological factors that shaped the development of the automotive industry during this period.

Overall, the 1931 DKW Luxus is an important piece of automotive history, and the footage of this vintage vehicle provides a unique opportunity for enthusiasts and historians to learn more about its design, features, and engineering. As a rare example of early motorcycle design, the Luxus model offers valuable insights into the development of the industry during the 1930s.
