We got rare early access to the next-generation BMW X5 (G65) prototype and sat down with Michael Ahlers, the vehicle's chief engineer, to break down what's actually new underneath. This is the first BMW model built from day one to support five separate powertrains in a single body: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and a future hydrogen fuel cell version. We cover the all-new decoupled rear axle (dampers moved outside the air spring for more usable air volume and a smoother ride), the active roll stabilization system on both axles, rear-axle steering with 3.2 degrees of rear angle, and why every version of the new X5 rides on staggered tires sized like today's X7. Ahlers also explains the "Heart of Joy" control unit, BMW's first in-house computer that merges chassis and drivetrain control into a single 10x-faster processor, plus details on the X5's new 800-volt electrical architecture and a 144 kWh battery pack for the U.S. market — the largest BMW has built. Full reveal coverage is coming in a few weeks.
