About BYD Auto

BYD Auto Co., Ltd. (Chinese: 比亚迪汽车; pinyin: Bǐyàdí Qìchē) is the automotive subsidiary of BYD Company, a publicly listed Chinese multinational manufacturing company. It manufactures passenger battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)—collectively known as new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China—along with electric buses and electric trucks. The company sells its vehicles under its main BYD brand as well as its high-end brands, which are Denza, Fangchengbao and Yangwang, and its commercial-focused brand, Linghui. BYD Auto was established in January 2003 as a subsidiary of BYD Company, a battery manufacturer, following the acquisition and restructuring of Xi'an Qinchuan Automobile. The first car designed by BYD, the petrol engined BYD F3, began production in 2005. In 2008, BYD launched its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the BYD F3DM, followed by the BYD e6, its first battery electric vehicle, in 2009. Since 2020, BYD Auto has experienced substantial sales growth that is driven by the increasing market share of new energy vehicles in China.

BYD Auto — Rare Footage & Clips

The rise of Chinese automaker BYD Auto on the global stage has been nothing short of meteoric. From its humble beginnings as a subsidiary of battery manufacturer BYD Company to becoming one of the leading players in the electric vehicle (EV) market, BYD Auto's journey is a testament to innovation and adaptability.

Our archives contain several clips that showcase BYD's impressive lineup of new energy vehicles (NEVs). One such clip features the BYD F3DM, the company's first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, which was launched in 2008. This pioneering model marked a significant milestone for BYD Auto, as it demonstrated the company's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable mobility.

In our archives, we also have footage of the BYD e6, the company's first battery electric vehicle, which debuted in 2009. The e6 was a game-changer in China's automotive market, offering an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional petrol-powered vehicles.

While BYD Auto may not be as well-known for its contributions to music history, it is interesting to note that the company's founder, Wang Chuanfu, has been quoted in various interviews discussing the parallels between electric vehicle technology and musical innovation. In a 2010 interview with Chinese media outlet Xinhua, Wang Chuanfu compared the development of EV batteries to the creation of new musical instruments, stating that both involve pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

This analogy may seem far-fetched at first glance, but it speaks to the innovative spirit and willingness to take risks that has driven BYD Auto's success. Just as musicians often experiment with new sounds and techniques to create something entirely new, BYD's engineers have been at the forefront of EV technology, developing cutting-edge battery systems and propulsion technologies.

However, we must be careful not to get too carried away with analogies. The true significance of BYD Auto lies in its commitment to sustainability and innovation. As one of the leading players in China's NEV market, BYD has played a crucial role in driving down emissions and promoting environmentally friendly transportation options.

In our archives, we have footage of various BYD models being put through their paces on the track, showcasing their impressive performance capabilities. The Denza D9, for example, is seen accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds, making it one of the fastest production cars in its class.

But BYD's success extends beyond the realm of high-performance vehicles. The company's commercial-focused brand, Linghui, has been instrumental in providing affordable and reliable transportation options for millions of Chinese citizens. Our archives contain footage of various Linghui models being used in urban settings, highlighting their practicality and versatility.

As we look to the future, it is clear that BYD Auto will continue to play a leading role in shaping the global automotive landscape. The 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, for example, featured a range of BYD vehicles, including the Denza D9 and the BYD Song Plus. Our clips from this event offer a glimpse into the company's product lineup and its commitment to innovation.

As we delve deeper into BYD Auto's history, it becomes clear that the company's success is not just about technology or design – it is also about people.
