The T111 was developed and manufactured during World War II as a heavy truck for use by the Wehrmacht. Production started in 1942 and continued for twenty years, ending in 1962 when it was replaced by the Tatra T138. Despite being built for the Nazi war machine, the vehicle ultimately played an important role after the war ended. The Tatra T111 contributed significantly to the rebuilding effort during the postwar era, mainly in Eastern Europe and the USSR. To its chief designer however it brought charges of treason and collaboration with the Nazi regime after the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia and contributed to the imprisonment of Tatra design guru Hans Ledwinka. The Tatra T111 exploits at Siberia had earned its reputation, and its legendary reliability contributed to its iconic status among those who had driven and lived in those conditions. Volkswagen controversy See also: Tatra V570 Both Hitler and Porsche were influenced by the Tatras.Hitler was a keen automotive enthusiast, and had ridden in Tatras during political tours of Czechoslovakia. He had also dined numerous times with Hans Ledwinka. After one of these dinners Hitler remarked to Porsche, "This is the car for my roads".while the book Car Wars, quotes Hitler as saying it was "the kind of car I want for my highways". In any case, of Ledwinka, Porsche admitted "Well, sometimes I looked over his shoulder and sometimes he looked over mine" while designing the Volkswagen. There is no doubt that the Beetle bore a striking resemblance to earlier Tatra. After the Second World War, Ledwinka was accused of collaboration with the German occupation forces and jailed for five years in Czechoslovakia. After his release in 1951, he refused to work for Tatra, and retired to Munich, Germany where he died in 1967. In 1992, after the fall of Communism, Hans Ledwinka was posthumously fully rehabilitated by the Czech authorities. http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/tatra-truck-scam-beml-to-sue-general-retd-v.-k.-singh/1/198764.html The state-run Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML), the firm General (retd) V. K. Singh alleged had supplied sub-standard Tatra trucks to the army at an exorbitant price, has decided to sue the former chief of army staff for defamation if he doesn't apologise. "We have decided to file a defamation suit against General (retd) V. K. Singh in case he doesn't apologise for making derogatory remarks about the quality of the Tatra trucks we supplied to the army, and making false claims on its price," BEML chairman and managing director VRS Natarajan said on Friday in his first interaction with the media after the controversy broke. General (retd) Singh, however, remained defiant. "Apology for what, I would like to ask Natarajan. I have not alleged anything, I just stated some facts," he said, adding that the CBI would take the final call on the veracity of the charges. "I am quite sure that he is motivated to file all kinds of things against me. The facts are known to him and now to the CBI. Let us proceed with the investigation, I am quite sure we will find out what the truth is," he said. The former army chief had also alleged that the BEML had offered him a Rs.14-crore bribe to clear a 600-Tatra truck consignment for the army. Natarajan, however, dismissed the allegations as baseless. "We emphatically refute all the charges made by the 'great' general against the company and the Tatra trucks the company had been supplying to the army since 1986. Regarding the alleged discrepancies in the allotment of highly-priced residential plots in Bangalore by the BEML Housing Cooperative Society, Natarajan said the PSU had no control over the society, which he added, was run by elected members. He did not respond to the statement given to the CBI by a former president of the society that several plots were given to important personalities at his behest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_treason
