Tatra 87 – The Car That Was Faster Than Hitler's Autobahn Speed Limit [4K]

The Tatra 87 is a luxury limousine produced by the Tatra company in Kopřivnice from 1937 to 1950. It succeeded the large luxury limousine T 77, production of which ceased in 1936. It was with this model that Jiří Hanzelka and Miroslav Zikmund embarked on their journey to Africa and South America from 1947 to 1950, proving the quality of Tatras. The first two prototypes of the T 87 were produced in 1936 for testing, followed by an additional five vehicles of the verification series in 1937. The Tatra 87 was officially introduced in 1937, and serial production began the following year. With minor changes, serial production of the T 87 continued until 1950. Compared to its predecessor, the new model was significantly lighter (by 330 kg), and the larger engine displacement increased maximum speed and improved acceleration. The Type 87 was also shorter, narrower, and had a shorter wheelbase. Improvements were made to oil cooling - the engine had a full-flow oil filter, an oil pressure cooler, and a dual draft carburetor. It was housed under an aerodynamically improved rear hood with a stabilizing fin. With a maximum speed of 160 km/h, the Tatra 87 was among the fastest cars of its time. Competing vehicles used engines with nearly double the displacement and consumed around 20 liters of fuel. Thanks to its aerodynamic shape, the Tatra 87 had a fuel consumption of only 12.5 liters. A total of 3,023 units of this type were produced over thirteen years (with production interrupted during World War II), including 1,371 units by 1945 and 1,652 units after 1946. The model was exported to Hungary, Romania, the USSR, Belgium, Germany, Austria, France, Sweden, the Republic of South Africa, Egypt, Argentina, and even Australia. Type 87-603 In the period from 1950 to 1953, some T 87 vehicles were equipped with a new engine, the T 603 A, later used in the T 603. This engine provided enough power for the car to reach a maximum speed of 170 km/h.
