Ciao, no more, 2009 Alan Phelan
The footage was shot at the Zastava (Yugo) car factory in Kragujevac, Serbia over a five year period during several visits while working on a sculpture project. The Yugo brand represented an infrastructural totality in the former Yugoslavia, but despite being ground down through shifting ideologies, wars, and economic collapse, it still made cars, slowly, painfully. The factory has since been bought by Fiat and renamed and rebranded. This piece was an outsider's take on this failed industrial giant, where ghosts inhabit the production process mirroring the wider societal, ideological breakdown.
