Zastava Evolution (1953 - 2008)
► Zastava Automobiles was a famous Yugoslav and later Serbian car manufacturer, best known for producing affordable small cars based largely on Fiat technology.
Zastava's automotive production began in Kragujevac, Yugoslavia, after World War II. The company developed a close relationship with Fiat, which provided designs and technical assistance. This partnership shaped Zastava's passenger-car lineup for decades.
One of its most famous cars was the Zastava 750, a Yugoslav version of the Fiat 600. Known affectionately as the “Fića,” it became an iconic small car throughout Yugoslavia.
Zastava later produced models such as the 101, Yugo, and Florida. The Yugo, based on Fiat technology, became particularly famous after being exported to the United States in the 1980s. Its low price made it one of the cheapest new cars available in America, although it developed a reputation for poor reliability.
The breakup of Yugoslavia and the wars of the 1990s severely affected Zastava. Production continued, but the company struggled with outdated technology and limited investment.
In 2008, Fiat took control of Zastava's Kragujevac factory and began transforming it into a modern Fiat production facility. The Zastava passenger-car brand subsequently disappeared.
In short: Zastava was an important Yugoslav carmaker that brought Fiat-based affordable cars to millions of people, with the Fića and Yugo becoming enduring symbols of Balkan automotive history.
