JMC Landwind 5 Flagship Test Review

The #Landwind5 has been very quietly marketed by #JMC in South Africa since the middle of 2017. I attended the launch and have subsequently tested both manual and automatic versions. I had the opportunity of a longer test of the range topping "Flagship" version over the holiday period, giving me another chance to evaluate this #mediumSUV that is being sold here at an absolute #BargainPrice. Powered by a 2L petrol turbo motor with 140kW and 250Nm it is certainly not lacking power for everyday use and freeway travelling. There is a bit of turbo lag, it simply takes a bit of getting used to and then simply allow for this when wanting instant surges or overtaking. The Flagship version also boasts an 8 speed automatic gearbox. Very smooth in operation, it does seem to hunt between 7th and 8th when cruising at the national speed limit (120 k/ph). I feel that this is more a function of the gearing than any problem with the gearbox itself. Flagship also provides comprehensive luxury spec on the vehicle and one change from the previous test is the addition of a full touchscreen with navigation and reversing camera included. Currently this can be added to all models in the range for R10 000, an absolute bargain in my eyes. Keep in mind that the Chinese sourced navigation system is still calibrated in miles and not kilometers. Standard fitment on the Flagship includes full leather seats, electric seat adjustment on both front seats, sunroof and 4 airbags. The Landwind 5 is extremely spacious inside and provides excellent luggage space as well. 855L according to Landwind. If I have to find any fault with the vehicle, it must be the fuel consumption which is rather high and most drivers will struggle to average under 10L/ 100km in city driving. However, the savings on the purchase price will always more than make up for any extra fuel expenditure. Overall, after 2 weeks, I continue to find the Landwind a surprise in every respect. For a buyer on a tight budget looking for a spacious #FamilySUV, this ticks so many boxes. At the time of this test, the Flagship model which is normally priced at R310 000 is being offered at R 299 880 INCLUDING THE R10 000 touchscreen system.
