The Elfin 1,5cc mkII BB story - aprox.1956

1950s1956youtube

Welcome once again.Today I dive in the Elfin bb engines. The Elfin had a very good name in the past because of the very wel running plain bearing engines. And they had a exelent power to weight ratio. And with super fittings and finish...you got a engine ikon. I was check out the story, and there was a lot to read. The most stuff is shortened in the clip. Its a unusual shape, but wel build engine. The only limit was the reed or clack valve like the british say. A engine running at 13000rpm means the membraan must move 26000 times1 (open & close cyclus). The reedvalve was maeby a copy from the cox engines, but It was also a source of troubel. If the membraan get dirt of a smal crack, the engine wil have quick troubel,If start at al. But later the Jena,Taifun ,Frog and E.D. proof, that the problems can be solved.Just use a fine mesh to prevent dirt come in,and make the valve stronger,so it wil last longer....and you keep a outstanding engine! The engine I run in the clip spins a 8x4 apc prop. Its actually to big,and the compression is less. But with a new piston and a 7x6 prop he shoud run arround 13000 rpm.Wil be continued... Many thanks for droping by... Soon moore here..Coments welcome, and check my other clips too,If you like model diesel engines!

About This Footage

The Elfin 1.5cc mkII BB story is a fascinating piece of automotive history that has been preserved in this 1956 footage. The clip showcases the Elfin engine's unique design and performance capabilities, making it an interesting watch for enthusiasts and historians alike.

One of the most notable aspects of the Elfin engine is its plain bearing design, which was considered exceptional at the time. The engine's power-to-weight ratio was also impressive, allowing it to deliver high performance in a compact package. The description highlights the engine's "super fittings and finish," indicating that it was built with attention to detail and quality.

The footage also delves into the challenges faced by the Elfin engine's designers, particularly with regards to the reed valve. This component was prone to problems due to its high-speed operation, which required the membrane to move 26,000 times per second (open and close cycle). The description suggests that this issue was later addressed through modifications, including the use of a fine mesh to prevent dirt from entering the valve and making it stronger.

The clip's narrator takes the viewer on a journey through the Elfin engine's development, highlighting its potential for high-speed operation. The engine is shown spinning an 8x4 APC propeller, which is described as being too large for the engine's capabilities. However, with modifications such as a new piston and a smaller propeller (7x6), the engine should be able to reach speeds of around 13,000 rpm.

The footage's production quality may not be high-end by today's standards, but its historical significance and the narrator's engaging commentary make it an enjoyable watch. The clip is part of a larger series focused on model diesel engines, which suggests that the creator has a deep understanding and appreciation for these machines.

From an engineering perspective, the Elfin engine's design and performance are intriguing. The use of plain bearings and the emphasis on power-to-weight ratio demonstrate a focus on efficiency and compactness. The challenges faced by the designers in addressing the reed valve issue also highlight the complexities involved in high-performance engine development.

For enthusiasts of classic cars and engines, this footage provides a unique glimpse into the past. It showcases an early example of innovative design and problem-solving in the automotive industry. The Elfin 1.5cc mkII BB story is a fascinating piece of history that continues to captivate audiences today.
