The Dino V6 Engine: A History of Power and Performance. The Dino V6 engine is a line of mechanically similar V6 engines produced by Ferrari for about 40 years from the late 1950s into the early 2000s. It was Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari, who was the son of Enzo Ferrari, who initially came up with the idea of a 6 Cylinder Engine (V6) and was assisted by Ferrari engineers Vittorio Jano and Aurelio Lampredi. Dino was a talented engineer who died of muscular dystrophy at the age of 24, but his legacy lives on in the Dino V6 engine. Ferrari decided to continue development of the engine in his son's memory. The first Dino V6 engine was a 1.5-liter unit that was used in Formula 2 race cars in 1957. The engine was a success, and it helped Ferrari win the Formula 2 championship that year. The Dino V6 engine was also used in a number of road cars, including the Dino 206 GT and 246 GT, as well as the Fiat Dino and Lancia Stratos.
