To be offered exclusively on Bring a Trailer. Vintique Motors is thrilled to present this 1991 BMW Z1! BMW Technik, established in 1986, was created to focus on designing and developing avant-garde concepts for new vehicles and technologies for BMW. Enter the Z1 designed by Harm Lagaay. The "Z" stood for Zukunft, which is the German word for "future", and the "1" represented the first creation to be proposed by BMW Technik. It was a significant proposal as the last time BMW had offered an open two-seater was between 1956 and 1959 when the 507 was in production. In 1987, the first road-going prototype had been completed and BMW management were so impressed they immediately greenlit it for production. The Z1 was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1987 and production started at BMW’s Munich plant in October 1988 in which just 8,000 were produced for the 1989 - 1991 model years and were only offered in Europe. This 1991 is 1 of 3,102 produced in Top Red and features a Dark Gray interior complete with Dark Grey Nubuck with camouflage leather inserts. This unusual seat option proved to be extremely popular as 6,565 were produced with this interior which was 82% of the entire production run. It features a 2.5L Inline 6-cylinder code named B25 and produced 170hp and 164 lb. ft. of torque mated to a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission. The body was state-of-the-art being made up of removable injection-molded thermoplastic panels to which special Varioflex paint was applied. Undoubtedly the Z1’s most iconic feature is its vertical sliding doors that drop into oversized sills that offered independent crash protection. This example had been registered in the U.K., owned by BMW Club members, since July of 1997 and it was imported from the U.K. in February of 2016 in which it has remained with the same owner since. There are numerous service records from U.K. based BMW dealerships accompanying the car during its time in the U.K between July 1997 and February 2016. These included regular servicing at Cooper Maldon BMW, Cooper Sevenoaks BMW, Sytner Chigwell BMW, Sytner Harold Wood BMW, and L&C Tunbridge Wells BMW. During its time here in the U.S. it has been registered in Richmond, Virigina and exclusively serviced by Richmond BMW. There is an odometer discrepancy to disclose dating back to January of 2002 when, for reasons unknown to us, the speedometer/odometer gauge was replaced at L&C Tunbridge Wells BMW and the original unit does accompany the sale. Today the odometer reads 30,508 miles in which 752 miles have been added since it was imported to the U.S. in 2016. In addition to the numerous service records accompanying the sale are the original books, manuals, keys, the original radio, and the U.K. license plates and a box full of miscellaneous items.
The BMW Z1 is a sports car which was produced in limited numbers by German manufacturer BMW from 1989 to 1991. It is the first model in BMW's line of Z series roadsters (two-seater convertibles). The Z1 is unique for its plastic body panels and vertically sliding doors which drop into the door sills. It is one of the first BMWs to use a multi-link rear suspension. The sole drivetrain specification is the 2.5-litre straight-six engine and 5-speed manual transmission from the E30 325i. In 1995, th...
