Midsize and full-size sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are among the most in-demand segments in the automotive industry, but owning one can require a substantial financial commitment. Looking to offer a more affordable alternative, a car manufacturer from China has introduced a compact off-road SUV that doesn’t break the bank. This small SUV is called the Baojun Yep, and it draws inspiration from the Suzuki Jimny, the iconic off-road mini SUV made by the Japanese automaker Suzuki since 1970. The Suzuki Jimny has achieved strong sales, especially in Europe and Japan, with a significant increase in demand from 1998 to 2023. The Baojun Yep is an off-road SUV produced under the Baojun brand, a collaboration between SAIC, General Motors, and Wuling. The name "Baojun" translates to "happy together" and also symbolizes "off-road" capability. The Baojun Yep is one of the most affordable SUVs on the market, starting at $11,785 for the three-door variant. Additionally, there are two more powerful models available, known as the Baojun Yep Plus. The five-door version offers seating for up to five passengers across two rows and features enhanced performance and advanced driving technologies, such as semi-autonomous parking capabilities. The standard Baojun Yep, though not a Plus variant, still offers two rows of seating but accommodates only four passengers comfortably. The higher-end Yep Plus models are priced at $12,900 and $14,300, providing buyers with a range of options.
Mid-size, also known as intermediate, is a vehicle size class which originated in the United States and is used for cars larger than compact cars and smaller than full-size cars. "Large family car" is a UK term and a part of the D-segment in the European car classification. Mid-size cars are manufactured in a variety of body styles, including sedans, coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks, and convertibles. Compact executive cars can also fall under the mid-size category.
