Strange facts about the METEOR MAKE & MODEL Origin: The American "Space Race Themed" Meteor name was stolen from Ford Canada where it had been a separate Marque as mandated by the Canadian government since 1979. Meteor was originally developed for the Edsel brand but was transferred to the Mercury lineup when Edsel was discontinued. Downsized: For 1961, the Meteor was Mercury's new low-priced, full-sized model, sharing a platform with the still full sized Ford Fairlane and featuring a smaller wheelbase than previous big Mercurys. Short U.S. Run: The Meteor was only sold as a full-sized car in the U.S. for one year before being moved to the intermediate size class for 1962 and was ultimately discontinued in the U.S. after the 1963 model year. Canadian Survival: While it disappeared from the U.S. market, the Meteor name continued to be used by Ford of Canada until 1981, first continuing as a separate Ford marque and later as a Canadian-exclusive Mercury model.
