In this video I'm continuing the restoration on my 1973 Datsun 240Z. In the last video the car was blasted, primed and also high build primer was applied. After a few weeks of curing the high build primer it was time to start preparing the car for the final paint job. The complete car and all its parts were block sanded. To see low spots better a dry guide coat was applied. Sanding is needed until all low spots are gone, but you need to stop sanding once you reach bare metal. If there are still low spots after that, means it needs body filler. Sometimes also a few light hammer hits could also help. On all the spots with body filler and bare metal was epoxy primer applied. Doors, fenders, hood and tailgate looked still a bit rough after that step. That's why another coat of high build primer came on for the final fine sanding with 320 grit. After this step the paint had 2 months time to properly cure before the actual paint job. During that time I applied seam sealer and sealed all gaps and everything where water could get trapped. I also installed sound deadening on the inside of the car. It's extra made to be painted, this way I'm having it like it was original. Right before the paint all surfaces were fine sanded with 400 grit. First the chassis was on the rotisserie to apply the undercoating. Then the car was painted underneath, inside and the engine bay. First one closed layer of the right grey shade was applied, after around 30 minutes 2-3 coats of base coat was applied. I choosed an original Datsun color: Datsun 920 Safari Gold. The color was adjusted a little bit to have more pop, the original one was a bit pale and too brownish. To finish the paint job, two nice coats of clear coat were applied. The car then came off the rotisserie to paint the outside. Once the chassis was done all the remaining parts were painted. For the rear panels, spoilers, grille and wheels I picked a nice anthracite called Daytona Grey. All these parts were covered by a matte clear coat. The dark parts fit very nice with the mustard yellow ones in my opinion, they have a very nice contrast. This was such a big journey to come to this point and I'm very happy to finally have the car painted. It took 48 days of work for all the work you can see in that 13 minutes video. I hope you like my work and enjoy the video. Datsun (UK: , US: ) was a Japanese automobile manufacturer brand owned by Nissan. Datsun's original production run began in 1931. From 1958 to 1986, only vehicles exported by Nissan were identified as Datsun. Nissan phased out the Datsun brand in March 1986, but relaunched it in June 2013 as the brand for low-cost vehicles manufactured for emerging markets. The restoration of a 1973 Datsun 240Z is always a labor of love, and this latest installment in the series is no exception. The clip "Finally Painting the Car! Datsun 240Z Restoration (Part 5)" offers a fascinating glimpse into the meticulous process involved in bringing this iconic sports car back to its former glory.
The video begins with the car having undergone extensive preparation work, including blasting, priming, and applying high-build primer. The owner has taken great care to ensure that every surface is properly prepared for painting, from block-sanding the entire car to applying a dry guide coat to identify low spots. This attention to detail is crucial in achieving a flawless finish.
One of the most interesting aspects of this restoration is the choice of colors. The owner has opted for an original Datsun color, Datsun 920 Safari Gold, which has been tweaked to have more pop and less brownish undertones. This shade was a popular choice for the Datsun 240Z during its production run in the early 1970s, and it's great to see it being brought back to life.
The painting process itself is also noteworthy. The owner begins by applying a single layer of grey undercoat, followed by multiple coats of base coat. This is an important step in achieving a rich, even color that will withstand the test of time. Once the chassis and engine bay have been painted, the car is removed from the rotisserie to paint the exterior.
The choice of Daytona Grey for the rear panels, spoilers, grille, and wheels adds a nice touch of contrast to the overall design. This anthracite shade was likely chosen for its ability to complement the warm tones of the Safari Gold without overpowering them.
Throughout this restoration process, it's clear that the owner has taken great care to preserve the originality of the car while still making some thoughtful modifications to enhance its appearance. The use of epoxy primer and high-build primer is a testament to their commitment to achieving a showroom-quality finish.
As with any classic car restoration, there are bound to be challenges along the way. However, with patience, dedication, and attention to detail, it's clear that this owner is well on their way to creating a truly stunning 1973 Datsun 240Z. This clip offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the process, and we can't wait to see the finished product.
The restoration of classic cars like the Datsun 240Z is not only a labor of love but also a testament to the enduring appeal of these iconic vehicles.
