At the 2004 North American International Auto Show, Ford unveiled a restyled 2005 model codenamed "S-197" based on the new D2C platform. Ford decided to make a new beginning for the design of the fifth-generation Mustang, going back to 1999 after nearly two decades, under the direction of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang, a veteran engineer in Ford's IndyCar program, and exterior styling designer Sid Ramnarace.
