In this episode, we take it to the track to see what it can actually do. We brought the car out to Chuckwalla Raceway with the guys at NASA (National Auto Sport Association) for a High Performance Driver Education track day to put the car through its paces. With very little track experience and a car that’s been sitting for years, we decided the best way to test it was to just send it and see what happens. Throughout the day we run multiple track sessions, dial in tire pressures, deal with a de-beaded tire, swap on a different set of wheels and tires, and even discover a misfire that means the car wasn’t running on all eight cylinders. Despite all of that, the V8 Merkur absolutely surprised us and proved it has way more potential than we expected. By the end of the day we learned a lot about the setup, what needs to be improved (seats, harnesses, cooling, and brakes), and what direction the car should go next as a proper track build. Huge thanks to NASA for having us out and showing what grassroots motorsport is all about. If you’ve ever wanted to take your own car to the track, their HPDE events are one of the best ways to get started. Let us know in the comments what upgrades we should do next!
