The Austin-Healey Sprite was announced to the press in Monte Carlo by BMC on 20 May 1958, just before that year’s Monaco Grand Prix. It was intended to be a low-cost model that “a chap could keep in his bike shed”. She was designed by the Donald Healey Motor Company, with production being undertaken by Austin-Healey. It first went on sale at a price of £669, using a tuned version of the Austin A-Series engine and as many other components from existing cars as possible to keep costs down.  This stunning example is no 661 of the first production with a build date of 24th April 1958, this is an extremely early Frogeye Sprite. Complete with its Heritage Certificate, this car is an original UK car, first supplied by Henley’s, Bristol. The car still features its factory extras, including a heater, laminated windscreen, locking fuel cap and no front bumper. The car has an all-steel body, supplied by Wheeler and Davies of Leicester with a complete body restoration by New Forest Classic Cars Ltd. Finished in its original colour of Primrose Yellow, body panels have been refitted and panel gaps perfectly aligned. The car has also been fitted with the upgraded 1270cc engine making this a smooth and more comfortable ride. A very rare, early example of the renowned Frogeye Sprite with exceptional bodywork. There is a good history file inc owners driving logbook, photos of the restoration and lots of invoices. On the road, she is a delight and a fun drive especially as she now has plenty of power with the upgraded engine. There are over 1.6 billion cars in use worldwide as of 2025. The French inventor Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built the first steam-powered road vehicle in 1769, while the Swiss inventor François Isaac de Rivaz designed and constructed the first internal combustion-powered automobile in 1808.
