Is the Porsche 997.1 Carrera S the ultimate "sweet spot" 911? Nearly 20 years after its debut, the 997.1 is no longer just a "used car"—it’s a bona fide modern classic. In this episode of 9WERKS TV, I’m back behind the wheel of the 3.8-litre Carrera S to discuss why this generation remains a high-water mark for the 911. We explore its "old school" hydraulic steering charm, the significant jump in interior build quality over the 996, and that unmistakable return to the classic "bug-eye" silhouette that saved the 911's identity. However, owning a 997.1 in 2026 isn't without its caveats. We take a deep, honest look at the "elephant in the room"—bore scoring. I explain exactly what causes this M97 engine issue and, more importantly, share the best preventative solutions to keep your flat-six healthy, from oil choices to low-temp thermostats and proper warm-up procedures. In this video: - The 20-Year Verdict: Why the 997.1 Carrera S is still a benchmark in 2026. - 996 vs 997: Comparing the leap in material quality and cabin ergonomics. - Analog Soul: The feeling of hydraulic steering and a mechanical throttle. - Bore Scoring 101: What you need to know before you buy. - The 9WERKS Protection Guide: How to minimise the risk of engine failure. Whether you're a current owner or in the market for your first 911, this is the definitive guide to buying and living with a Porsche 997.1. By following these 2026 specialist-recommended protocols, you can significantly mitigate the risks associated with the M97 engine: Low-Temperature Thermostat (LTT): Swap the factory unit for an LTT. It opens earlier and stays open, preventing "hot spots" in the rear cylinders (specifically 4, 5, and 6) where scoring usually begins. The "Start & Go" Rule: Never let your 997 idle to warm up. Cold idling creates a rich fuel mixture that can "wash" oil from the cylinder walls. Start the car and drive away immediately, keeping revs under 3,000 RPM until the oil (not just water) is up to temperature. Specific Oil Selection: Ditch the long-life 0W-40. Specialists now recommend higher-viscosity oils with high Moly (Molybdenum) content, such as Driven DT40 or Motul 8100 X-Cess, to provide better lubrication film strength for the Lokasil bores. Annual Oil Analysis: At every oil change (which should be every 5,000 miles or 12 months, regardless of what the book says), send a sample to a lab like SPEEDiagnostix. High levels of aluminum or silicon are your "early warning system." Fuel Injector Health: After 20 years, original injectors can "drip" rather than mist. Replace or professionally clean injectors every 75k miles to prevent localized over-fueling and cylinder washing. The "Manometer" Test: Have your specialist perform a manometer test on the AOS (Air Oil Separator). A failing AOS can cause incorrect crankcase vacuum, leading to poor ring seal and accelerated wear.
