**9WERKS Checklist: How to Protect Your 997.1 Carrera S**
Bore scoring doesn't have to be a "matter of when, not if." By following these 2026 specialist-recommended protocols, you can significantly mitigate the risks associated with the M97 engine:
Low-Temperature Thermostat (LTT): Swap the factory unit for an LTT. It opens earlier and stays open, preventing "hot spots" in the rear cylinders (specifically 4, 5, and 6) where scoring usually begins.
The "Start & Go" Rule: Never let your 997 idle to warm up. Cold idling creates a rich fuel mixture that can "wash" oil from the cylinder walls. Start the car and drive away immediately, keeping revs under 3,000 RPM until the oil (not just water) is up to temperature.
Specific Oil Selection: Ditch the long-life 0W-40. Specialists now recommend higher-viscosity oils with high Moly (Molybdenum) content, such as Driven DT40 or Motul 8100 X-Cess, to provide better lubrication film strength for the Lokasil bores.
