Steve Magnante talks 1957 Ford Tudor Supercharged Sedan selling Richmond Auctions Oct 24/25 9k miles
Steve breaks down this amazing 1957 Ford Tudor Supercharged Sedan that will be auctioned off by Richmond Auctions Oct 24-25. You can register at bid.richmondauctions.com. Here is a description of this lot: No Reserve. One of the most powerful domestic cars of the mid-to-late 1950s, the Ford Custom Tudor Sedan with its optional supercharged F-Code 'Thunderbird Special' 312 cubic-inch V8 engine made 300 horsepower. The package was green-lighted when senior-level Ford exec Robert McNamara got wind of Chevrolet's 283 Fuel Injection engine looking to dominate Daytona's Speed Week that year. This very desirable automobile with a factory-installed supercharged V8 engine was a one-year option to homologate this package for various racing sanctioning bodies, and it was McNamara who ordered 100 copies of the powerful new 312 ci "Thunderbird Special" V-8 immediately fitted with McCulloch/Paxton VS57 superchargers for the 1957 season. With the centrifugal blower, the engine's output went from 270 horsepower to 300. In the NASCAR Grand National configuration, output was realistically 340 at 5,300 rpm. To amortize the engine's cost and meet NASCAR's homologation numbers, Ford made it available in all 1957 models, from the cheapest Custom two-door business coupe to the flashiest Thunderbird and Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable Hardtop. However, it was the ever-changing NASCAR rules to outlaw superchargers and other items that ultimately made Ford's supercharged 312 engine a one-year-only option. This is a beautiful example of Ford's venture in producing a supercharged high-performance V8 engine package. This Custom Tudor sedan has only accumulated a mere 9,962 miles on the odometer. No corners were cut in returning this car to its current condition, and it represents the birth of purpose-built cars to set records and win races. VIN: F7FG294564.
