About Delahaye

Delahaye was a family-owned automobile manufacturing company, founded by Émile Delahaye in 1894 in Tours, France. Manufacturing was moved to Paris following incorporation in 1898 with two marriage-related brothers-in-law, George Morane and Leon Desmarais, as Emile Delahaye's equal partners. The company built a low volume line of limited production luxury cars with coachbuilt bodies; trucks; utility and commercial vehicles; buses; and fire-trucks. Delahaye made a number of technical innovations, particularly in its early years. After establishing a racing department in 1932, the company came to prominence in France in the mid-to-late 1930s, first with the International record-breaking Type 138; then, the Type 135 that famously evolved into the special short-wheelbase sports-racing Type 135CS; followed by the V12 types 145 and 155 racecars. Many races were won, and records set. The company faced setbacks due to the Second World War, and was taken over by amalgamation with arch competitor Hotchkiss in 1954. Both were absorbed by the large Brandt manufacturing organization, within months, with automotive products ended.

Delahaye — Rare Footage & Clips

The storied history of Delahaye, a family-owned automobile manufacturing company that left an indelible mark on the world of motorsports, luxury automobiles, and even music. Yes, you read that correctly – music. While Delahaye's significance in the automotive world is well-documented, its connection to music lies in the fact that the company's cars were often featured in films and documentaries about jazz legends of the 1940s and 1950s.

One notable example is the 1949 Delahaye 175S, which made a cameo appearance in a documentary about Louis Armstrong. The film showcased the car's sleek design and powerful V12 engine, highlighting its capabilities on both the track and the road. This brief appearance may seem insignificant at first glance, but it speaks to the broader cultural significance of Delahaye's cars during this era.

The 1940s and 1950s were a time of great creativity and experimentation in both music and automotive design. Artists like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker pushed the boundaries of jazz, while car manufacturers like Delahaye were pushing the limits of what was possible with engine design and aerodynamics. The Delahaye 175S, with its sleek lines and powerful V12 engine, embodied this spirit of innovation.

But Delahaye's story begins long before its connection to music. Founded by Émile Delahaye in 1894 in Tours, France, the company quickly gained a reputation for building high-quality luxury cars with coachbuilt bodies. The company made several technical innovations in its early years, including the introduction of the first four-wheel brakes on a production car.

As the years passed, Delahaye continued to innovate and push the boundaries of what was possible with automobiles. In 1932, the company established a racing department, which would go on to achieve great success in France during the mid-to-late 1930s. The Type 138, introduced in 1935, set several international records, cementing Delahaye's reputation as a manufacturer of high-performance cars.

The Type 135, introduced in 1936, was another significant milestone for Delahaye. This car would go on to become one of the most iconic and sought-after models of the era, with its sleek design and powerful V12 engine making it a favorite among racing enthusiasts. The Type 135's success can be seen in several clips within our archive, including "1937 Delahaye 145 Chapron Coupe – Grand Prix Legend Turned Wartime Coupe" and "1949 Delahaye 135MS Coupé | The Auburn Auction | August 31 - September 2".

Delahaye's racing success continued throughout the 1930s, with several notable wins and records set by the company's cars. However, the outbreak of World War II would have a devastating impact on the company, forcing it to cease production and focus on wartime efforts.

In the post-war era, Delahaye attempted to revive its fortunes with new models like the Type 145 and Type 155. These cars continued the company's tradition of building high-performance luxury vehicles, but ultimately failed to recapture the success of the pre-war era.

Today, Delahaye is remembered as one of the most iconic and influential car manufacturers of the 20th century. Its legacy can be seen in several clips within our archive, including "Delahaye V12 Speedster Typ 165V 1939" and "Elegance on Wheels: The Allure of the 1940 Delahaye 135 M Cabriolet".
