About Birkin Cars

Birkin Cars, Ltd. is a South African-based car manufacturer. The company's specialty and only currently-produced vehicle is the S3 Roadster, a kit-car copy of the Lotus Super 7. The founder and owner of the company is John Watson, a descendant of pioneering race car driver Tim Birkin. Birkin Cars was formed in 1982. Founder John Watson, an automotive enthusiast, was a fan of the classic Lotus Seven. However, the car had since finished production from the manufacturer and could no longer be purchased as new. Through the early 1980s, Watson developed and built his own version of the Seven. The cars were unveiled to the public at the 1983 South African Grand Prix. The first shipment of completed S3 Roadsters were delivered directly to be sold at Lotus car dealerships. Since the 1980s, Birkin has expanded several times, but has kept its base of operations near Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. Cars are currently sold through dealers around the world in the United States, Japan, and across Europe. The car can be purchased as either a turn-key car, or as a DIY kit, that can be completed by the owner.

Birkin Cars — Rare Footage & Clips

The Unassuming Roots of Automotive Excellence: Birkin Cars

Tucked away in the rolling hills of South Africa lies a testament to the ingenuity and passion of automotive enthusiasts. Birkin Cars, Ltd., a company born out of a love for classic cars, has been quietly producing some of the most authentic kit-cars on the market for over three decades. Founded by John Watson in 1982, this small manufacturer has managed to carve out a niche for itself among car aficionados worldwide.

For those familiar with the archives of RedlineArchive, it's not uncommon to come across clips showcasing the Birkin S3 Roadster in action. One particular clip from our collection, featuring a pristine example of the S3 taking on the twisties at the 2015 South African Grand Prix, is a testament to the car's agility and handling prowess. The way the roadster navigates the corners with ease, its engine roaring as it exits each turn, is a true delight for any driving enthusiast.

But what makes Birkin Cars truly remarkable is its connection to the world of motorsport. As we delve into the history of this South African-based manufacturer, it becomes apparent that the company's roots run deep in the annals of racing lore. Founder John Watson, a descendant of pioneering race car driver Tim Birkin, has ensured that his company stays true to its heritage.

Birkin Cars' flagship model, the S3 Roadster, is an homage to the classic Lotus Super 7. With its sleek design and lightweight construction, it's no wonder why this kit-car has become a favorite among enthusiasts seeking an authentic driving experience. In fact, one of our most popular clips on RedlineArchive features a group of owners gathering at a private track day, where they showcase their S3 Roadsters in all their glory.

The story of Birkin Cars is also a fascinating tale of innovation and perseverance. When the Lotus Super 7 went out of production in the early 1980s, Watson saw an opportunity to create his own version of this iconic car. Through tireless dedication and hard work, he developed the S3 Roadster, which was unveiled to the public at the 1983 South African Grand Prix.

Since its inception, Birkin Cars has expanded several times, but it's remained committed to its core values: authenticity, quality, and a passion for driving. The company's decision to offer both turn-key cars and DIY kits has allowed enthusiasts worldwide to experience the thrill of owning an S3 Roadster, whether they're willing to take on the challenge of building one themselves or prefer to have it delivered straight from the factory.

While Birkin Cars may not be a household name in the world of motorsport, its significance extends beyond the realm of automotive history. Interestingly, Tim Birkin, the founder's ancestor, was also a close friend and rival of Sir Malcolm Campbell, the legendary speed record holder who set numerous records on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the 1930s.

In fact, it's worth noting that the name "Birkin" has become synonymous with speed and innovation. In the world of music history, there is a notable reference to Birkin – French singer and actress Jane Birkin, who was known for her love of cars and was even named after Tim Birkin by her parents.

This fascinating connection highlights the intersection of art and automotive culture, where passion and innovation know no bounds. Whether you're an enthusiast of classic cars or simply a fan of motorsport, Birkin Cars is a name that deserves recognition and respect.

As we continue to explore the archives of RedlineArchive, it's clear that Birkin Cars has left its mark on the world of automotive enthusiasts.
