About Automeccanica

Automeccanica was a Greek automobile producing company. Founded in 1979, it was one of the companies that produced the "passenger-utility" type of vehicle popular in Greece at the time for tax categorization reasons. Its creators were former executives of Autokinitoviomihania Ellados (meaning 'Greek Car Industry') a company founded in 1975 to also produce vehicles of this type – it assembled Italian Fissore models based on Fiat products, as well as other Fiat models and variants. Automeccanica followed a different path, building the Zebra model, a passenger-utility car based on the Daihatsu Charade, as well as assembling the Charade itself. In 1985, when the law favoring the Zebra-type vehicles changed, Automeccanica stopped its production (after about 2,000 units had been built) and started licence production of the Soviet Lada Niva model, while it developed its own cabrio-version of the car. In 1988 it acquired its former "father" company, Autokinitoviomihania Ellados and the latter's factory in Thiva.

Automeccanica: A Forgotten Chapter in Greek Automotive History ===========================================================

Tucked away in the archives of RedlineArchive is a fascinating story of an oft-overlooked chapter in Greek automotive history - Automeccanica, a company that produced vehicles from 1979 to 1988. Founded by former executives of Autokinitoviomihania Ellados (AKE), another pioneering Greek car manufacturer, Automeccanica's journey is a testament to the complexities and nuances of the industry.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Automeccanica's story is its connection to the "passenger-utility" type of vehicle popular in Greece during the late 1970s and early 1980s. For tax categorization reasons, these vehicles were a staple on Greek roads, with companies like AKE producing Italian Fissore models based on Fiat products. Automeccanica, however, chose to forge its own path, building the Zebra model - a passenger-utility car based on the Daihatsu Charade.

A clip from our archives shows a rare glimpse of the Zebra in action, its rugged design and compact size making it an attractive option for Greek drivers. While not a high-performance vehicle by any means, the Zebra's significance lies in its ability to adapt to the local market's needs. As we delve deeper into Automeccanica's history, it becomes clear that the company's success was largely due to its willingness to innovate and respond to changing circumstances.

In 1985, a significant shift occurred when the law favoring Zebra-type vehicles changed. With production numbers totaling around 2,000 units, Automeccanica was forced to reassess its strategy. Rather than abandoning ship, the company chose to pivot by starting license production of the Soviet Lada Niva model. This move not only allowed Automeccanica to stay afloat but also demonstrated its ability to adapt to changing market conditions.

A clip from our archives shows the Lada Niva in action, its rugged off-road capabilities making it an attractive option for Greek drivers. While not as flashy as some of its contemporaries, the Lada Niva's durability and reliability made it a staple on Greek roads. Automeccanica's decision to produce this vehicle was a shrewd move, one that allowed the company to maintain a foothold in the market.

In 1988, Automeccanica made another significant move by acquiring its former "father" company, AKE, and its factory in Thiva. This acquisition marked a new chapter in the company's history, one that would see it continue to produce vehicles under license from other manufacturers. While not as glamorous as some of its contemporaries, Automeccanica's story is a testament to the importance of adaptability and innovation in the automotive industry.

In many ways, Automeccanica's legacy is a reminder that success is often built on the ability to respond to changing circumstances. Rather than getting bogged down by failures or setbacks, companies like Automeccanica chose to pivot and adapt, ensuring their continued relevance in an ever-evolving market. As we continue to explore the archives of RedlineArchive, it becomes clear that Automeccanica's story is one that deserves to be told - a testament to the resilience and determination of those who dared to forge their own path.
