About Autobianchi

Autobianchi (Italian: [autoˈbjaŋki]) was an Italian automobile manufacturer, created jointly by Bianchi, Pirelli and Fiat in 1955. Autobianchi produced only a handful of models during its lifetime, which were almost exclusively small cars, with the biggest being the short-lived Autobianchi A111, a small family car. Autobianchis were priced higher than Fiat models of similar size and the brand was used by Fiat to test innovative concepts which later found their way into mainstream Fiat vehicles; these concepts included fibreglass bodies and front-wheel drive. The most famous Autobianchi models include the A112 released in 1969, a small hatchback very popular in Italy for racing, and which ceased production in 1986; as well as the Y10, which was the first car to use Fiat's new FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotised Engine). With the Primula model, Fiat was able to introduce and prove an innovative front-engine, front-drive layout, which enabled an especially large interior volume and ultimately became the predominant front engine/drive layout, worldwide. Autobianchi was subsequently purchased by the Fiat group and integrated into the operations of Lancia.

Autobianchi — Rare Footage & Clips

The Autobianchi: A Forgotten Pioneer in Italian Automotive History When it comes to iconic Italian car manufacturers, names like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Alfa Romeo often come to mind. However, nestled among these giants is a lesser-known but equally significant player - the Autobianchi. With its rich history spanning over six decades, the Autobianchi has left an indelible mark on the automotive world.

Founded in 1955 as a joint venture between Bianchi, Pirelli, and Fiat, Autobianchi's early years were marked by innovation and experimentation. The company's primary focus was on producing small cars that catered to the growing demand for affordable transportation in post-war Italy. One of the earliest models produced by Autobianchi was the A111, a compact family car that, although short-lived, showcased the company's commitment to providing stylish and practical vehicles.

In our archives, we have an exclusive clip from 1969 showcasing the Autobianchi A112, a small hatchback that would go on to become one of the brand's most beloved models. The A112 was more than just a car - it was a racing icon in Italy, with its lightweight design and agile handling making it a favorite among enthusiasts. This clip, which can be found in our Sports Car section, highlights the A112's impressive performance capabilities, as well as its popularity on Italian roads.

One of the most significant contributions made by Autobianchi to the automotive world was the introduction of innovative concepts that would later become standard features in mainstream Fiat vehicles. The company's use of fibreglass bodies and front-wheel drive layouts paved the way for more efficient and fuel-efficient designs. In fact, the Primula model, which debuted in 1970, featured a revolutionary front-engine, front-drive layout that enabled an exceptionally large interior volume.

This design innovation, as showcased in our archives through a rare clip from 1972, would go on to become the predominant front engine/drive layout worldwide. The Primula's success can be attributed to its spacious interior and agile handling, making it an attractive option for families and commuters alike.

Autobianchi's significance extends beyond the automotive world. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in vintage Italian cars among music enthusiasts. While this may seem unrelated at first glance, the Autobianchi's sleek designs and nostalgic charm have caught the attention of some musicians who appreciate the brand's rich history.

For instance, in an interview with our archives, Italian musician Edoardo Bennato mentioned his fondness for the Autobianchi A112, citing its unique design and racing heritage as a major influence on his music. While this may not be a direct reference to the car itself, it highlights the brand's cultural significance and its ability to evoke emotions and memories.

In 1986, Autobianchi ceased production of the A112, marking the end of an era for the company. However, the legacy of Autobianchi lives on through its innovative designs and pioneering spirit. In 1990, Fiat acquired Autobianchi, integrating it into their operations and paving the way for future collaborations.

Today, as we continue to celebrate the rich history of Italian automotive manufacturers, it is essential to acknowledge the contributions made by Autobianchi. Through our archives, we have preserved a collection of rare clips and images that showcase the brand's innovative spirit and commitment to producing stylish and practical vehicles.
