About Armstrong Siddeley

Armstrong Siddeley was a British engineering group that operated during the first half of the 20th century. It was founded in 1919 and is best known for the production of luxury vehicles and aircraft engines. The company was created following Armstrong Whitworth 's purchase of Siddeley-Deasy, a manufacturer of luxury motor cars marketed to the top echelon of society. After the merger of companies, this focus on quality continued throughout in the production of cars, aircraft engines, gearboxes for tanks and buses, rocket and torpedo motors, and the development of railcars. Company mergers and takeovers with Hawker Aviation and Bristol Aero Engines enabled the continuation of car production, which had ceased in August 1960. The company was absorbed into the Rolls-Royce conglomerate, which was interested in the aircraft and aircraft engine business.

Armstrong Siddeley — Rare Footage & Clips

Armstrong Siddeley: A Legacy of Engineering Excellence In the realm of British engineering, few names evoke as much prestige as Armstrong Siddeley. Founded in 1919 through the merger of Armstrong Whitworth and Siddeley-Deasy, this esteemed company left an indelible mark on the automotive world with its luxurious vehicles and pioneering aircraft engines. As we delve into the archives to explore the history of Armstrong Siddeley, it's fascinating to note that their impact extends beyond the realm of cars and planes.

A clip from our collection, "Armstrong Siddeley: The Golden Years" (clip #AS-001), showcases the company's commitment to quality and innovation. Filmed in the 1950s, this footage highlights the craftsmanship that went into each vehicle, from the sleek designs to the precision engineering. It's a testament to the attention to detail that earned Armstrong Siddeley a reputation as a manufacturer of luxury vehicles for the elite.

Armstrong Siddeley's influence extends beyond the world of cars and planes, however. A lesser-known aspect of their legacy is their connection to music. The company's name has been adopted by an album titled "Vollgas..." (no further information available) and more notably, the Armstrong Siddeley Skiffle Group released an album in 1984. While this may seem like a tangential connection, it speaks to the enduring power of the brand as a cultural touchstone.

In the world of music, skiffle was a genre that emerged in the UK during the post-war period, characterized by its DIY ethos and eclectic mix of instruments. The Armstrong Siddeley Skiffle Group's album, released over four decades after the company's heyday, is a fascinating example of how the name has been co-opted as a badge of honor for those seeking to evoke a sense of nostalgia and tradition.

But what does this say about the brand itself? Was it simply a matter of circumstance that the name was adopted by musicians looking to pay homage to a bygone era? Or is there something more profound at play? One possible interpretation is that the Armstrong Siddeley name has become synonymous with a particular kind of Britishness – a blend of tradition, quality, and innovation.

This connection to music may seem tenuous, but it highlights the enduring power of the Armstrong Siddeley brand. Even as the company itself ceased car production in 1960, its legacy continued to shape the automotive world through its aircraft engines and other innovations. Today, we can appreciate the significance of this engineering group not only for its technical achievements but also for its cultural impact.
