Rage (also known as rage music, rage rap, or rage beats) is a subgenre of trap music that originated in the United States in the late 2010s. Distinguishing features of rage include short, looping, stereo-widened, future bass-influenced synthesizer lead hooks and basic, energetic trap rhythms. Among the pioneers of the early rage style were Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert and Trippie Redd. By the 2020s, the style had developed through the influence of Carti's album Whole Lotta Red and his Opium label with artists such as Destroy Lonely and Ken Carson, along with Yeat and SoFaygo, who contributed to the popularization of the genre. Rage rap would evolve into a more extreme and experimental sound with artists such as OsamaSon, Che, 2Slimey, and Edward Skeletrix. This style was defined by the use of bass heavy 808s and aggressive production.
