50 YEARS AT LE MANS: THE 19 PORSCHES TO HAVE TRIUMPHED AT LA SARTHE 1ª. - 1970 - 917K - FIRST TIME Porsche's first triumph at La Sarthe came in a year where attrition was at a record high. Despite winning six of the seven World Sportscar races that season, it was Ferrari who were expected to reign supreme at Le Mans. 2ª .- 1971 - 917K - THE BENCHMARK The #22 917K of Gils van Lennep and the now Red Bull Racing mastermind Dr. Helmut Marko would suffer engine issues in the opening three hours of the race losing major time to the race-leading 917L of Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliver. 3ª.- 1976 - 936 - ICKX MAKES HIS MARK Already a two-time Le Mans victor, Jack Ickx would team up with Van Lennep as part of an all-star lineup. The German marque brought the infant 936 to Le Mans for the first time in an effort to topple the home might of Renault Alpine. 4ª.- 1977 - 936/77 - ANOTHER WIN FOR THE 936 Ickx was once again the start of the show at Le Mans 1977. After his #3 race-winning chassis from the year prior broken down after 45 laps, the Belgian ace joined Jürgen Barth and Hurley Haywood in the #4 Martini 936/77 and hauled the car from 40th in the standings to once again beat Renault Alpine in their back yard. 5ª.- 1979 - 935/K3 - AN UNLIKELY HERO The humble 935 dominated GT racing in the 1970s, and owed much of its DNA to the 911 road car that Porsche had released 16 years prior. Customer team Kremer would take their car to overall victory made even more impressive by the fact that prototype cars were still eligible to race. 6ª.- 1981 - 936 - THE DOMINATION BEGINS To complete a rather satisfying hat-trick, the third of three 936 chassis that Porsche had raced at Le Mans finally achieved an overall victory, after its siblings took triumphs in 1976 and 1977. Chassis #003 would romp to victory in the hands of British ace Derek Bell and Ickx. 7ª.-1982 - 956 - THE BEGINNING OF GROUP C The 50th Le Mans marked a new era for the race and the start of the now iconic Group C epoch. Porsche arrived with the 956, a car which benefitted from expertly engineered ground effect. 8ª.- 1983 - 956 - SO CLOSE TO PERFECTION Porsche's dominance continued into 1983, and that years race was defined by a thrilling intra-team battle between the two Rothmans cars, culminating in one of the most incredible finishes in Le Mans history. 9ª.- 1984 - 956B - INTRODUCING JOEST RACING Upgrades to the dominant 956 would allow, once again, Porsche to take to the top step of the overall podium at Le Mans in 1984. The race that year was, however, of a different flavour to Porsche's previous successes. 10ª.- 1985 - 956 - FINAL HURRAH The 1985 race would see Porsche wave goodbye to the 956 as Joest Racing claimed back-to-back victories at La Sarthe. Despite the debuting 962C racing that year, and setting a lap record at the track that would remain unbeaten until 2017, it would be the model's predecessor that took to the top step. 11ª.- 1986 - 962C - AS ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER OPENS Joest Racing arrived at Le Mans in 1986 as firm favourites to complete the hat-trick, however the Rothmans 962C in the hands of the mesmeric Bell, lap record setter Hans-Joachim Stück and 1983 victor Holbert had other ideas. 12ª.- 1987 - 962C - THE FINAL FLOURISH The reigning victors returned with the Rothmans 962C to take what would be the last of seven consecutive wins which is yet to be matched by any other manufacturer. 13ª.- 1994 - DAUER 962 - TEN YEARS OLD, STILL PICKING UP TROPHIES Fast forward to 1994 and the 962 would produce one of the strangest results in Le Mans history. 14ª.- 1996 - WSC-95 - DOMINATION IN BOTH CLASSES Joest Racing would return to the top step of the podium with the Tom Walkinshaw designed WSC-95 by holding off the faster LMGT1 class winner; the Porsche 911 GT1. 15ª.- 1997 - WSC-95 - JOEST DO THE DOUBLE AGAIN In a carbon copy of their 1984/5 triumphs, Joest would repeat a famous back-to-back double in 1997. Notably the car that took victory that year was the exact same. 16ª.- 1998 - 911 GT1-98 - QUIT WHILST YOU'RE AHEAD After coming so close to victory in the tow previous years, 1998 would mark the year the much-adored 911 GT1-98 would claim overall honours. 17ª.- 2015 - 919 HYBRID - F1 STARDOM ON SECOND YEAR BACK A year after Porsche ended their near 20 year leave of absence at Le Mans the LMP1 class 919 Hybrid would bring home the manufacturer's 17th victory amongst tough competition. 18ª.- 2016 - 919 HYBRID - THAT INCREDIBLE FINISH Porsche were arguably second best at Le Mans in 2016. heavy rain favoured the 919 Hybrids and Audi's R18 TDI, but it would be the Toyota TS050s that would take up the baton at the front once the circuit had dried out. 19ª.- 2017 - 919 HYBRID - THE GREATEST COMEBACK IN LE MANS HISTORY Where to start with the 2017 race. One of the hottest Le Mans on record with temperatures in the mid 30's on race day, even at night the June heat was unrelenting.
