The bike was making a nasty racket after running for 10-15 minutes (cold, it ran absolutely perfect). Initially I thought it might be the main bearings, or the cam chain/ timing system. So naturally, I drained the oil. Instead of a regular drain bolt, this bike had an aftermarket ball valve fitted to it. I drained the oil to see if there was any discolouration, or bearing material. There wasn't. So I moved onto the cam chain/ timing system. To replace the cam chain on these *particular* bikes, the cases must be split. So while I was tearing the engine down, everything seemed normal at first. The stator was black. It wasn't grounded or anything, but a replacement would be recommended. When I removed the oil pan, that's when everything became clear. Lots and lots of flakes in the bottom of the engine. The main bearings are toast. Normally thats why you'd drain the oil first, to see if theres anything weird like that. I did drain the oil, and there was no flakes. So I *suspect* the aftermarket drain was keeping large particulate in the engine. As a mechanic, this is how it goes sometimes. You cant be 100% correct on everything the first time, every time. To whom says you should, haven't enough experience as a mechanic. Of course, I may get comments saying things like "always check this, do that, etc". Monday morning quarterbacks. Things like this aren't very common, and they rarely make it to social media. So I thought it'd be good to show that not every story/ post has a happy ending (I cant say its a bad ending, customer was bummed, but he's been around the block, he knows how it goes sometimes). Anyways, the customer had a budget for the repair, and was willing to go through with a cam chain/ oil pump/ tensioner/ gasket replacement. Unfortunately the bearings added too much cost onto the job. BMW charges for each half bearing. So we thought that if we'd also be doing the bearings, we may as well do a full rebuild. That's just not in the budget.
