The Porsche 911 GT1 is a racing car of the German manufacturer Porsche for the GT1 category. Unlike its rivals (McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40), the Porsche 911 GT1 is far removed from the production car (911) from which it only takes over the central cell. In fact, Porsche took the opposite approach to that of its rivals by building a competition car for which it homologated a road version. The 911 GT1 was entered in the 1996 Le Mans 24 Hours, where it took second and third place behind Joest Racing. At the end of the season, it crushed the competition in the BPR GT Championship, winning all three events in which it was entered, at Brands Hatch (Great Britain), Spa (Belgium), and Zhuhai (China). In 1997, Porsche entered an advanced version of its GT car (Porsche 911 GT1 Evo) in the fourth round of the new FIA GT Championship, which used the front and rear lights of the new production 911 (996). The latter is dominated in the FIA GT championship by Mercedes with its CLK-GTR coupe and even by McLaren with their evolved version of the F1 GTR (McLaren F1 GTR "LongTail"). At Le Mans, after leading for much of the race, the 911 GT1s once again gave up victory to Joest Racing and two McLaren F1s who took second and third place on the podium, with the best 911 GT1 finishing in fifth place.
