The 1950 Ferrari 166MM Le Mans Berlinetta: What’s It Like To Drive?

This Ferrari 166MM Le Mans Berlinetta by Touring, chassis 0048 M, was first registered in July 1950 to Angelo Biemmi of Iseo, Brescia. By March 1951 it passed to Luciano Masseroni of Milan, son of Inter Milan’s president. Six weeks later, Masseroni and Riccardo Vignolo entered the Mille Miglia, finishing 3rd in the 2.0-litre class and 21st overall after 978 miles of racing. Through Ferrari dealer Franco Cornacchia, the car passed in 1952 to Milanese driver Bruno Moroni. He and Arturo Carta entered that year’s Mille Miglia but retired mid-race. It was entered under Cornacchia’s Scuderia Guastalla. Later that year, it was sold to Ferruccio Musitelli of Bergamo, who with his brother Giulio raced the 166MM with success. Giulio won his class at the 1952 and 1953 Coppa Intereuropa at Monza, though the 1953 Mille Miglia ended in a DNF. In 1955 the car went to Adolfo Macchieraldo, then later that year to Marcel Willemin of Geneva, who finished 4th in class at the 1955 Grand Prix de Spa. It then passed to Ferrari mechanic Edgar Jean-Mairet. By the late 1960s, the car was with Jean-Pierre Zanchi of Lutry, and by the early ’70s lay dormant in Pierre de Siebenthal’s yard near Lausanne - complete, but requiring restoration. In 1995 it was acquired by Italian dealer Emilio Comelli and sold to collector Friedhelm Loh, from whom it was acquired in 2000 by the current German owner's late father. Restoration was slow and painstaking, led by Carrozzeria Quality Cars in Padova with mechanicals rebuilt by nearby Autofficina Omega. Its sole appearance has been at the 2021 Cavallino Classic in Modena, winning the Judge’s Cup, and it received Ferrari Red Book certification in 2024. Less than 500km have been driven since restoration. Offered now from 25 years of continuous family ownership, this jewel-like 166MM Berlinetta represents the essence of early Ferrari—light, balanced, and powerful. Our recent 80km drive confirmed its magic: a raw, emotional connection to Ferrari’s Mille Miglia roots and the DNA that would lead to everything afterwards.
