1965 BUICK SPORT WAGON - THE COOLEST STATION WAGON
Filmed in a very crowded barn therein lies this sensational new type of station wagon. By 1965, Buick production had risen 50 percent from the 1960 total, putting the division fifth in the annual industry race. An expanded lineup and the unique Riviera in particular, played a big part in this, as did a very healthy overall market that brought Detroit cars in record numbers - over 9.3 million for the calendar year, the best since '55. All car makers had many choices to choose from. And, in fact, the Buick lineup for '65 started with the Special, then Skylark, Le Sabre, Wildcat, Electra 225, and the Riviera. The Buick Sport Wagon was a mid-size station wagon built by Buick and a corporate sister of the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser. Featuring a raised roof and skylights over the cargo and second seat area, this model was an extended wheelbase version of the Buick Skylark station wagon. Buick Sport Wagons were built in three generations, spanning 1964–67, 1968–69, and 1970–72. During this time period, this was the only luxury level station wagon offered under the Buick model line until 1970 when the Buick Estate Wagon returned in 1970. The last generation did not receive the skylights. An innovative model was introduced on February 4, 1964. Using the new GM A platform the Sport Wagon used a 120-inch wheelbase, that was 5 inches longer than the other Skylark four-door sedans and wagons. The 1964 to 1967 Sport Wagons had an optional skyroof that consisted of four tinted glass panels surrounding the elevated section of the roof over the cargo area. A forward-facing third row of seats was optional. Sport Wagons were available in standard and more upscale "Custom" trim package and continued the long-standing tradition offering the Woodgrain using DI-NOC a vinyl wood-grained wrap appearance. The base price of this two seat Sport wagon stood at $3,160 and is 1 of 8,300 copies. There were two engine choices - either a 255 cubic V8 with 155 horsepower or a 300 cube V8 with 250 horsepower. There were 12 paint choices this year and this original survivor is finished in the popular Shell Beige. When is the last time you've seen a Sport wagon ? For me, it's been decades. Glad I found this. Thanks for viewing.
