The predicament of the hydrogen fuel cell car is often likened to the chicken or the egg scenario: Without fuel cell cars to buy, who'll invest in hydrogen refueling stations? And without stations -- well, you know the rest. But making matters a whole lot worse has been that until now, this particular chicken and this particular egg might as well be made of 24-karat gold. They're both staggeringly expensive technologies. Example: The fuel cells in the 100 experimental Highlanders Toyota built in 2007 each cost a cool $1 million dollars. The line forms here. Listen to this, then. The cost of the fuel cell that'll be in Toyota's first commercially available offering (a 2015 model whose name and design will bow at the Tokyo Motor Show) will be slashed by 95 percent. Ninety. Five. Percent. Not only that, it'll be more powerful and about two-thirds the size of the 2007 edition, and will neatly fit within the center console and beneath the front seats. A second fiscal barrier has been the cost of the carbon-fiber-wound, 10,000-psi hydrogen storage tanks. Compared to a conventional car's gas tank - made of simple molded plastic and operating at essentially atmospheric pressure - the words "carbon fiber" and "10,000 psi" and "hydrogen" (think Hindenburg!) ought to nicely bring the problem into focus.
