Exploring The Painted Hills Unit w/ Our '92 Toyota Previa | John Day Fossil Beds National Monument

This part of our minivan advanture trip in our 1992 Toyota Previa vanlife mobile (to-be or minivan camper conversion) consisted of exploring The Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This was the first of the units (or sections) of the John Day Fossil Beds national park. Afterward, we headed off to the other two units, Sheep Rock Unit and Clarno Unit! John Day Fossil Beds Painted Hills has some amazing places to hike and see. We had no idea these kinds of landscapes existed in Central Oregon!! The first stop on our day at the John Day National Monument was the Painted Cove Trail. It was a nice quarter-mile hike loop with some sweet painted hills. There is a boardwalk to keep you from destroying the fragile ground! Many fossils to find at this spot! Then we went to the unmarked trail of Red Scar Knoll Trail at the end of the dirt road. This is pretty epic as well and provides lovely views. The thumbnail is from this trail hike. Finally, we ended our day at the Painted Hills Overlook trail which is a half-mile long. This is where you will get those really awesome vistas.
