The BMW M12/13 engine is one of the most legendary powerplants in Formula 1 history. Despite its tiny 1.5-liter inline-four layout, it was capable of producing up to 1,400 horsepower in qualifying trim (the Benetton B186 version). Built from a 1960s road car engine block (M10), it was heavily modified to withstand extreme boost pressures—reportedly up to 5.5 bar. However, that insane power also came with drawbacks, mainly the turbo lag and reliability issues.
