The first 8-cylinder Mercedes-Benz was introduced in 1928 and was called Nurburg 460. In the early 30s. it occupied an intermediate position between the 6-cylinder models Stuttgart 200 and Mannheim 370 and the luxurious Mercedes-Benz 770. Nurburg was designed by Ferdinand Porsche as a competitor to the successful Zwickau car - Horch 8. However, the Mercedes-Benz 460 already at the time of its debut looked old-fashioned: it had a traditional flat frame, so the body was too high. A year later, the designers realized their mistake and completely changed the chassis, lifting its load-bearing beams above the axles suspended on longitudinal leaf springs. The wheelbase was 3670 mm, but later a shortened version of the 460K (3430 mm) appeared. In 1928-1932. Mercedes-Benz Nurburg 460 (18/80 PS) was equipped with a 4.6-liter inline 8-cylinder engine with 80 hp side valves, a 4-speed manual gearbox without synchronizers, mechanical drum brakes with Bosch-Dewandre servo and wheels with wooden needles. There were three factory bodies to choose from: Pullman Limousine, Tourenwagen and 4-door Cabriolet D, but the client could also turn to a private coachbuilder. In 1930, Daimler-Benz presented Pope Pius XI with a special car based on the Nurburg 460 limousine with a massive seat in the cabin - the first official "popemobile". The Nurburg series remained in production until 1939. In 1931, a modification of the Mercedes-Benz Nurburg 500 appeared with an 8-cylinder engine with a volume of 4918 cm3 and a power of 100 hp. From 1932 it was simply called the Mercedes-Benz 500, and the Nurburg 460 was discontinued. Compared to Horch 8, the model sold poorly: in total, from 1928 to 1939. 3824 units were produced. Mercedes-Benz Nurburg, while Horch 8 sales for 1926-1934. amounted to 12000 units.
