The Bristol 400 emerged from one of the most unusual genealogies in British motoring history, a car whose roots lay not in any long-standing automotive dynasty but in the aeronautical world of the Bristol Aeroplane Company. When the war ended in 1945, many aircraft manufacturers faced the same existential question: what to do in peacetime? Bristol’s answer was bold. Instead of shrinking into irrelevance, they acquired the remnants of Frazer-Nash, which itself had access to BMW’s pre-war automotive designs as war reparations.
