Back when CHevrolet Impala was a car for life! Take a look at how the legendary Chevrolet Impala was produced in American factories in the 1960s compared to today. Manufacturing processes, assembly techniques, and even the workers have changed dramatically over the years. Where and how were Chevrolet Impalas made in the United States in 1966? In 1966, Chevrolet Impalas were produced in several large General Motors assembly plants across the United States, including factories in Michigan, Ohio, California, and other states. The cars were built on long assembly lines with a high level of manual labor. Workers installed engines, interiors, body panels, and trim largely by hand, with limited automation compared to today. Was the Chevrolet Impala the best-selling car in the United States in the 1960s? Yes. The Chevrolet Impala was the best-selling car in the United States for much of the 1960s. It was especially successful in the mid-1960s, and in 1965 it became the first automobile in U.S. history to sell over one million units in a single year. Is the basic automobile manufacturing process similar today to what it was in the 1960s? In principle, yes—the basic steps such as stamping body panels, assembling the body, painting, installing mechanical components, and final inspection remain the same. However, modern car manufacturing relies heavily on robotics, computer-controlled systems, and advanced quality control, making the process faster, safer, and more consistent than in the 1960s. © Built in the USA 2026.
