There aren't many workshops in the world building road-going Porsche 917 recreations. LMK in Melbourne is one of them. I spent a morning there with Tim Keiller — one half of the father-and-sons team behind every LMK 917 that leaves this shop — to walk through the Gulf-liveried #20 Tim finishing right now. LMK was founded in 2001 by Tim's late father Andrew, an aeronautical engineer whose CV includes three years on the Concorde supersonic program before he turned his hand to designing a 917 short-tail recreation from factory drawings. Andrew, brother Anthony and Tim have been building them ever since. LMK 917s have gone to owners in Austria, Germany, the USA, Mexico, England and South Africa. Andrew unfortunately passed in 2023 — Tim is finishing this one for the Australian customer, with this Porsche for the first time staying in Australia. The build is next-level. Tube chassis, fibreglass body pulled from originals, Penske shocks, red suede interior stitched by Currier Trimming on Phillip Island, oil cooler up front with the lines running through the passenger side ("make the passenger suffer, not the driver"). This isn't the first icon LMK has recreated either — they've built the famous psychedelic Hippie Car livery for another customer, using a rare book the customer shipped in as reference. If you love race Porsches, this one's for you. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 This is a Porsche 917 — meet LMK917 0:45 Tim Keiller + the family business 2:30 The Gulf 917 in front of us 5:00 Building from scratch — tube chassis + fibreglass body 9:00 Compliance: US roads vs Australian regs 11:00 Inside the cabin — Penske shocks, red suede, pedal box 14:00 The Albins 6-speed sequential 915 gearbox tangent 17:30 Flat fan engines + why flipping a 930 case is hell 20:30 Other LMK917 builds — the Hippie Car 23:00 What's left before this one hits the road 25:00 Sign-off ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔧 MYPORSCHEAI — the app I built for Porsche owners Built by a Porsche owner for Porsche owners. The Porsche 917 is a sports prototype race car developed by German manufacturer Porsche to exploit the regulations regarding the construction of 5-litre sports cars. Powered by a Type 912 flat-12 engine which was progressively enlarged from 4.5 to 5.0 litres, the 917 was introduced in 1969 and initially proved unwieldy on the race track but continuous development improved the handling and it went on to dominate sports-car racing in 1970 and 1971. In 1970 it gave Porsche its first overall win at ...
