The history of Japanese motor sports really begins with the holding of the 1st Japan Grand Prix in 1963. Domestic makers soon began putting intensive efforts into this demanding sport, with the first major step being the formation of the TSMC (Toyota Motor Sports Club) team in 1965. Toyota's competition debut came the next year, when their DOHC engine-mounted 2000GT participated in the 3rd Japan Grand Prix.
The Toyota Celica 1600GT, which appeared in October 1970, was the company's first car designed as a racer from from the ground up, using the latest high tech computer aided design and wind tunnel testing to develop aerodynamic front and rear spoilers, headlight covers and overfender. With its new dry sump 2T-G engine to deliver high power and improved suspension arms, it was designed to rival the best touring cars in the sport.
The Celica 1600GTmade its competition debut at the Japan All-Star Race held in Fuji in November 1971, and the three vehicles run in the TS-b class swept first, second and third place finishes. The Celica's romp continued into 1972, with a win in the touring car class at the Suzuka Auto Race in March of that year. In April, it held off stiff competition from the Skyline GT-R and Fairlady 240Z to win the overall victory and prove it was the best car in the business. The climax of the season, however, came on May 3rd at the Japan Grand Prix, when the Celica grabbed first, second and fourth place, only giving up third place to another Toyota design, the Corolla Leven. Today on the Monster Hobbies Model Car Garage we will be looking at the 1970 Toyota Celica 1600GT Race Edition by Hasegawa. This is a 1970 Toyota Unboxing video of a great model kit now available at Monster Hobbies for a limited time.
This kit gives you a lot of "Bang for your Buck" in that you have a choice of building this car as stock, race, and right or left hand drive. The only thing missing out of this excellent model kit is a separate detailed engine.
The 1970 Toyota Celica 1600GT Race Edition by Hasegawa is an excellent representation of this car. The detail is crisp and there is a high parts count.
The interior consists of the floor pan, center console, shift lever, parking brake, bucket seats, rear bench, door panels, pedals, dashboard, your choice of 2 steering wheels, and a steering column. Although not on the instruction sheet, the parts tree gives you the option of using a right hand or left hand dashboard for the Japanese roads or the North American highways. This is also reflected in the windshield wipers, so pay close attention to those parts locations.
The instructions for the 1970 Toyota Celica 1600GT Race Edition by Hasegawa are easy to follow and include illustrations for all the assembly steps with part-by-part painting call-outs. The colors coincide with either GSI Creos Aqueous Hobby Color or Mr. Color paints. I'm not sure which of those paint companies we have here in North America though.
The 1970 Toyota Celica 1600GT Race Edition by Hasegawa has an excellent undercarriage complete with McPherson Struts, steering arm, front lower arm, exhaust pipe with aluminum tube extension, rear differential with drive shaft, coil springs, shocks and radius rods. Wheel assemblies include a choice of 2 different mag wheels, soft rubber tires, disc/drum brakes and neoprene caps to hold the wheels to the axles.
The chrome on this model kit is excellent and really enhances the look of the finished car. The grill includes the quad headlights just like the real Celica. To finish off the chrome on the body around the windshield and rear glass, I recommend using Bare Metal Foil and a brand new #11 hobby blade.
The body flares and spoilers are all separate pieces and you could leave them off if you want to build this kit factory stock.
Overall, the 1970 Toyota Celica 1600GT Race Edition by Hasegawa is an excellent model kit that goes together very well. The kit overall is so great that it is a joy to build. If you can find any of these kits, I highly recommend you get one!
