MagSong Inc. created this video to present the history of pickup truck. A pickup truck or pickup is a light-duty truck having an enclosed cab and an open cargo area with low sides and tailgate. In 1913, the first pickup was developed by the Galion Allsteel Body Company, who installed hauling boxes on slightly modified Ford Model T chassis. The Dodge Brothers was the first automakers that introduced a 3/4-ton pickup with cab and body constructed entirely of wood in 1924. In 1925, Ford followed up with a Model T-based, steel-bodied, half-ton with an adjustable tailgate and heavy-duty rear springs. Billed as the “Ford Model T Runabout with Pickup Body”, it sold for US$281; 34,000 were built. In 2020, “Ford’s F-Series pickup remained America’s best-selling vehicle for the 39th straight year. It is also the industry’s top-selling truck for 44-consecutive years.” According to an article published by Michael Wayland on https://www.cnbc.com/. Brief History: 1931: Chevrolet produced its first factory-assembled pickup. 1932: Ford Australia produced the first Australian “ute” pickup. Second World War: The US government halted the production of privately owned pickup trucks. 1950s: Consumers began purchasing pickups for lifestyle rather than utilitarian. 1954 ~ 1973: Pickups with four-doors (crew cab) started to become popular. It collected tax on fuel-inefficient cars while exempting pickup trucks; This further distorted the market in favor of pickups. 1980s: The compact Mazda B-series, Isuzu Faster, and Mitsubishi Forte appeared. Subsequently, American manufacturers built their own compact pickups for the domestic market: the Ford Ranger, and the Chevrolet S-10. 21 Century: Pickups becomes the most popular vehicles in the United States. It was introduced in 1961 and remained in production until 1968, when Toyota released the Toyota Hilux. In 1967, the Hino Briska was renamed the Toyota Briska, then the Hilux was introduced, based on the Briska. There was also a commercial delivery van, appropriately called the Hino Commerce.
