CVAR at Eagles Canyon Raceway, Group 4, Unipower GT
Several races with Corinthian Vintage Auto Racing at Eagles Canyon Raceway near Decatur, Texas. Camera car is a 1967 Unipower GT, a mid-rear-engined chassis with a fiberglass body. 71 of these were built by Universal Power Drive in England, a company that primarily built off-road trucks for use in heavy hauling such as timber. Designed by former Lotus employee Ernie Unger and Val Dare-Bryan, with help from Frank Costin on aerodynamics and from an unnamed Ford GT-40 engineer who was moonlighting. The engine and gearbox are from a Morris or Austin Mini Cooper S and the suspension is derived from the same, with other parts sourced from Triumph (Spitfire or GT6 windshield frame and glass) and Ford (Cortina door lock mechanisms). The square tube frame was produced by Arch motors, a well-known race chassis manufacturer, and the body was built by Specialised Mouldings, who built many race car bodies from that era. This particular example, chassis #13 (originally red), was exported to Spain in March 1967 and in May participated in the 6 Hours of Barcelona endurance race. It went on to race in many other road race events and hill climbs in Spain. To see the company's foray into complete automotive weirdness, do a Google search for "Quasar Unipower".
