Ferrari 400 Superamerica - 1960

Ferrari America
1960s1960youtube

The 400 Superamerica was a two-seater sports car built by Ferrari from 1960 to 1964. It was produced in two series, tailored to the demands of the customer. Were also built unique models, called Superfast II, III and IV. The great majority of the specimens were coupes, with a single car to be built with right-hand drive. The first model was built on behalf of Gianni Agnelli. It was the first Ferrari car whose name did not take origin from the unit displacement, ie the volume of the individual cylinders, but from that total, which was in fact about 4000 cc. In the beginning was the pace of 2420 mm, later increased to 2600 mm to provide more space in the cockpit. The ignition was formed by two coils and a distributor, with two coils. The feed was composed of three carburetors double body brand Weber. Lubrication was wet sump, with single plate clutch. The engine was V12 at 60 °, longitudinal front. He had passed the concept of "long block" designed initially by Aurelio Lampredi (and used on the 410 Superamerica), and embraced the project Gioacchino Colombo, which provided for a distribution with single overhead camshaft per bank of cylinders, which had two valves for each of them. The engine was enlarged, with the run to reach 71 mm bore and 77 mm. The displacement was 3967.44 cc, with a compression ratio of 8.8: 1. The power output was 340 hp at 7000 rpm. The frame was tubular steel and was formed by two beams with ovoid section that exceeded the rear axle, toughened by cruises and a front section pretty solid. The front suspension was independent, swinging arms and coil springs with telescopic shock absorbers on each wheel and stabilizer bar, while the rear were rigid supported by longitudinal semi elliptic leaf springs, two lateral struts and coil springs with hydraulic shock absorbers on each wheel . The brakes were disc with hydraulic control on the wheels, while the parking brake acting with a cable on the rear axle. The change was synchronized four-speed with overdrive top electric on the relationship. The steering was worm and sector gear. The maximum speed reached by the model was of 265 km/h.

About Ferrari America

Ferrari America is a series of flagship grand touring Ferrari models primarily built for the North American market in the 1950s and 1960s. The America models were equipped with large V12 engines and often had custom bodywork done by famous coachbuilders in Italy. All America models used a live axle in the rear, were front-engined, and had worm and sector steering. Two models from the series, the 410 and the 400, were called Superamerica with the final model, the 500 being called the superfast.
