Aiden here with e-trailer. If you own a truck, Jeep or a Sprinter van and you're looking for a way to carry some e-bikes with you without having to sacrifice access to your vehicle, then the Rocky Mounts Backstage could be the perfect bike rack for you. Let's check it out. The reason it's gonna be such a good option is because of the swing away bike rack. Underneath the whole rack, you're gonna have a blue handle that you can loosen up to release the swing away arm. And once it's completely unthreaded, you'll hear a click. You can pull this pin closer to the front and start to move that hole arm away. That first pin will relatch and as we open it up the rest of the way, a new pin in the center will also latch and lock it in place, giving us, in this case, full access to our truck bed and tailgate. Or on something like a Jeep with a spare tire and a swing away door, it'll clear that, or in a Sprinter van with the dual opening doors in the back, you'll be able to have full access there too. Vehicles like that just tend to not interact with bike racks very well and a swing away arm is the way to fix it. To fold it back in, I'm gonna release the center pin first and start to swing that arm in and as I swing I'll pull that original pin that latched as well. Eventually I'll wanna just switch sides and push the rack in the rest of the way where the pin clicks in and I can re-thread that handle underneath. So overall, very quick and simple operation. And when it's fully threaded in, it's gonna be rock solid. This can still be a good option for regular passenger vehicles or SUVs with a standard lift gate because this blue handle at the back is our tilt away handle, allowing us to lean the rack away from the vehicle. And in the case of our truck today, partially lower our tailgate, but for most vehicles with a lift gate, this will be the way you get access to the hatch. It's really helpful if you don't have the room or the time to swing away, say in a grocery store or parking lot. This gives just enough room to put some bags in the back if you need to, but still have that swing away option for when you're at the end of your bike ride. You wanna sit down somewhere and change your shoes, take off your helmet, maybe have a snack or something and not have to worry about your stuff being in the way. And for your bikes, the rack can handle 60 pounds per bike. So great for those E-bikes. On the rack, we've got a secondary attachment point on the back tire with this wheel strap and our primary attachment point with the front wheel hook. This means no frame contact for the bike, making it a good option for carbon frame, alternative frame, or maybe even just a bike with a nice paint job. With this rack you'll get a cable that's long enough to wrap around both frames of your bikes for sure. I was able to get it through the front tire on our e-bike, but not the front tire on our rear bike. It'll just loop through itself and down to an anchor point at the bottom of the rack where you can lock it up. This will be key to like to your hitch lock, which we'll see a little bit later. But it's nice to know that you've got security for both the rack and your bikes and you only have to keep one set of keys. But the important thing to me is how the rack really performs on road. So we did take it out onto the road and test it out on our test course a bit too. Hit some potholes, some speed bumps, driving at highway speeds and moving side to side a bit. And the one thing I'll say is the rack performed pretty well, but you'll notice that there is a pretty good amount of movement, particularly in the side to side action of the rack and then a little bit of movement whenever we do hit bumps or potholes back and forth. I'd honestly say it's not too bad and I think that's largely because this is designed to be a swing away bike rack. It's purpose built to have that swing away arm. And although there's a lot of points of movement, they're pretty solid. The one thing is just because you're stacking a rack on top of that swing away arm, it gets a little bit top heavy. And I will say that I've used this rack personally on my truck here for a number of months now. I typically only have my one bike on there and it's not an e-bike, so it's not pushing the weight capacity too bad. And with just the one bike, it really doesn't move all that much.
