Toyota GR Super Sport Concept Previews a Future Supercar
Toyota GR Super Sport Concept Previews a Future Supercar, This first look is based on Toyota's endurance racer. “Racing improves the breed” has long been a central tenet of the auto industry, but it hasn’t been one that has been highly visible at Toyota. That appears to be changing, however, and the most dramatic evidence yet is this Toyota GR Super Sport concept. Unveiled in a somewhat low-key fashion at the Tokyo auto salon (the Japanese equivalent to the SEMA show), the GR Super Sport concept is a project of Toyota’s in-house motorsports outfit, Gazoo Racing. But it’s not a race car. Instead, in the words of Gazoo president Shigeki Tomoyama, it is “the starting point for Toyota’s completely new challenge to develop sports cars from active race cars.” The GR Super Sport concept appears to be a first look at a future Toyota supercar based on the current World Endurance Championship racer, the TS050. It’s more than just a design exercise, as it was presented alongside a working bare chassis. Details, however, are few, with Gazoo Racing saying only that it uses a mid-mounted, twin-turbo 2.4-liter direct-injection V-6 as part of a hybrid powertrain with a total output of 986 horsepower.
