The corporate government has been jacking us around for over fifty years about the manufacture of smaller and more efficient transportation, along with the control of our transit systems. The 1950;s was an orgy of gas guzzling cars and diesel buses, keynoted by the buyout of electric trolley systems throughout the US, by General Motors. They scrapped the trolleys and replaced them with transit buses, a win -win for the corporations and the oil barons. In the late 50's the foreign car market produced some honest 30 mpg cars, VW being the most famous, followed in the 60,s and 70,s by high qualiity Japanese cars, Toyota comes to mind, in fact I owned a 1967 sedan for while & probably should have kept it. There have been a few attempts, such as the Chevrolet EV1, a Toyota Diesel electric that got 125 mpg, and an all electric Toyota RAV4-EV in 1997, but none of these actually hit the market, but were leased to a select few, mostly in California, because of environmental legislation. The RAV4 EV is an all-electric version of the popular RAV4 SUV produced by Toyota. It was leased from 1997 to 2003, and at the lessees' request, many units were sold after the vehicle was discontinued. A total of 1,484 were leased and/or sold in California to meet the state's mandate for Zero-emissions vehicle. As of the second half of 2010 there are almost 750 units still in use.
