Tesla "Plaid" Model S (2020): What to expect!

“There is no “refreshed” Model X or Model S coming, only a series of minor ongoing changes. Most significant change in past few years was to use high efficiency Model 3 rear drive unit as S/X front drive unit. That went into production 3 months ago.” And this is true. Unlike traditional automakers, Tesla doesn’t have Model years. They continue to research better ways to build their cars and immediately implement them if they show that it will improve the car in any way. Probably the biggest change we’ve seen recently is the facelift back in 2016, but since then the car has basically been the same since it was released, save for some minor changes. Like Elon said in his tweet they did recently change the front drive unit in to the same one as the Model 3, and there may be more big changes coming as well. First one is a pretty big one, and that is the plaid powertrain. If you’ve been following Tesla news recently, they brought a prototype of this car to the Nurburging track. If you remember from the Roadster unveil, the plaid powertrain has 2 motors in the back and one in the front. The current Model S has ludicrous speed, and the only thing beyond that is Plaid. This new powertrain will definitely add some insane performance to the Model S, bringing it close to the reported 1.9 second 0-60 times on the next gen Roadster. Since this new powertrain will likely need a new chassis, I think Tesla will also take the time to design it to use the 18650 cells that are currently being used in the Model 3, along with a new cooling system to accommodate V3 supercharging. That is one big thing that current Model S owners are missing out on, and would be a welcome addition. Because the Model S is a much bigger car, they’ll likely switch to a bigger capacity battery as well. The current Model S has a 100kwh pack, while the next gen roadster is supposed to have a 200kwh pack. Just switching to the new batteries with higher energy density will bump the capacity up a little bit, but they also might start using a new battery chemistry with Maxwell’s technology. So when it’s all said and done, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a battery pack of 150kwh or more. This also come with a range of over 550 miles, which is pretty awesome and would definitely get rid of the notion that EVs don’t have a lot of range. So if Tesla is going to make all of those changes, I wouldn’t be surprised if they also tweaked some of the styling and we got a new look Model S as well.
