Oops. Naturally, we had to ask Toyota: was this a freak incident, or did we mess up? Toyota has now responded, explaining that water entered the air filter, affecting the hybrid system. Their official statement boiled down to: “You broke it. Next time, read the manual and go slower.” Fair enough, but we still have some questions. Sure, we hit the puddle a little fast but seriously, this is a hardcore off-roader! It should handle more than a bit of splashy fun, right? What happened? Well, the hybrid module got drenched, leading to electrical failure. The bigger mystery is how water even made its way into the airbox, which sits higher than the wading depth of 700mm.
