1966 FORD FAIRLANE 500 GT CONVERTIBLE – 390 V8 The 1966 Ford Fairlane 500 GT Convertible represents one of the most exciting periods in American automotive history. Ford completely redesigned the Fairlane for 1966, giving it a muscular new appearance with vertically stacked headlights, a wide horizontal grille, long body lines and extensive chrome. The GT transformed the practical Fairlane into a genuine performance machine. Its signature engine was Ford’s legendary 390-cubic-inch FE V8, approximately 6.4 liters, equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and factory-rated at 335 horsepower SAE gross. It competed in the same booming performance market as the Pontiac GTO and Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396. The convertible made the formula even more special, combining V8 performance with open-air driving and seating for four. The car pictured features metallic gray paint, black bucket seats, a center console, GT identification, chrome wheels and a beautifully detailed 390-style engine compartment. FEATURES AND STYLING The 1966 Fairlane is instantly recognizable by its vertically stacked headlights and enormous chrome grille. Its long hood, straight character lines and extended rear quarters create the classic proportions associated with 1960s American automobiles. Inside are bucket seats, analog instrumentation, a thin-rim steering wheel, extensive bright trim and a center console. There are no screens or electronic driving aids; the experience revolves around mechanical controls, V8 sound and traditional rear-wheel-drive performance. The photographed engine wears Ford blue paint, a chrome air cleaner marked “390” and polished valve covers. Some components appear restored or customized, so photographs alone cannot confirm whether the engine and drivetrain are factory-original or numbers-matching. MOVIES, MUSIC AND POP CULTURE The Fairlane is strongly connected to America’s 1960s drag-racing, cruising, hot-rodding and muscle-car culture. Unlike the Mustang or Dodge Charger, the 1966 Fairlane GT is not defined by one universally famous movie appearance. The Fairlane name later became recognizable in popular culture through the 1990 movie “The Adventures of Ford Fairlane,” although that film is not specifically about this model.
