Electric Car Basics #1: The Two Types of Electric Cars

From the world's first mobile self-driving studio, here is our first episode with less opinion and all about the facts: TAKING CHARGE - BASICS. Fundamental facts about Electric cars. In this episode we help you understand the two basic type of Electric Cars for sale: 100% electric and Plug - in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). Which are Electric + Gasoline. 100% electric is the Tesla Model S and X (cool and expensive) and a bunch of ugly, low range cars “Regulatory Compliance Cars” that will look obsolete in about 2-3 years, but were the first E-cars on the market. (Chevy Spark, Fiat 500e, even the Nissan Leaf) This is where innovation is really taking place. So battery technology is getting much better (longer range), and car companies are finally designing nice looking electric cars: Witness the Chevy Bolt and the Tesla Model 3, two affordable ($30k to %40k) and long range (greater than 215 miles). Still not equal to gasoline cars, but its coming.. The second type of electric car, the PHEV, still has a gasoline engine along with batteries and an elector motor. This acts more like a gasoline powered car, with some distance that can be all electric. The point of these cars is to have an electric car with no "range anxiety" or worry about the batteries running out as the only car power source. PHEV are for folks who want electric, are willing to pay more than the gasoline powered equivalent model (Prius v Prius Prime), and/ or live in rural areas and need the range. PHEV will always be around because of the range issues for some drivers, but 100% electric cars will eventually win as they will be cheaper and faster than ICE cars within a decade.
