Pendulum DJ Set @ BME Budapest 2017-09-12 (backstage)
so the other day I was showing a preview of one of my current projects to paul and the conversation escalated to me asking about if he's playing here anytime soon. as it turns out (at the time), yes!, he said, he's doing a set at the bme university days soon, and then he proceeded to actually invite me to his guest list (!!!). i took annie with me and so then we went, midweek from 11 pm to something like 4 am, even though we both had our course and work to continue doing the next morning. there was no way on earth we would miss this though (you Never know if events like this are a once in a lifetime sort of ting or not). so then we arrived to find out that we are not on what the venue refers to as the regular complimentary list. turns out we were meant to be given full backstage access instead !! they have their list of artists and people associated , and pendulum had 4 people on its whole list. the gatekeeper lad at the back entrance though that it's the band arriving which left him puzzled, only to then realize that the people on the list are paul, his driver, annie and greg (us). that was an absolutely insane revelation to us (we stood there with open mouths for half an hour). back there, since when you're backstage you're meant to look like you belong there, we got checked and questioned by pretty much every security guard, because we obviously could barely contain our excitement (and also had no idea what to do, i mean how can you truly prepare for this ?? ). soon, paul and the driver lady arrived with a black peugeot (the driver lady actually is the person standing in front of us recording at the beginning of the video). after the 99th cars coming in we could immediately tell it's him because of the m a g n i f i c e n t beard of his. gets out with a big smile and lets us catch a hug - i'm telling you paul is TALL , i am 183 and he's at least half a head taller than i am. he leads us straight to his container (quarters), we catch a talk actually he's got something for me : an original 2005 bbk hold your colour vinyl lp and an extremely rare immersion collectors edition release (vinly+cd+shirt+flag!!), both with signatures from rob, gaz and paul themselves! absolutely insane. annie brought him a cool plate she drew that day, which she gave to paul. after that he asked about how my tunes are doing, which created the golden opportunity to give him a little mini dvd from a few tunes of my friends i which i've compiled earlier in the day for him. says he likes those little CDs, and pockets it right after. shortly, it was time for him to hop onto the stage, and we followed him there. he went up on the stage, and invited us up there too (of course guard enthusiastically wanted to find out what we're doing there but we managed to convince him that we are formally invited onto the stage). we stayed at the right (from the perspective of the audience) side of the stage around the super cool looking technician lads, and spectated his set from there. he played a tons of cool stuff, star wipe, slamdemo, bloodsugar vip, immunize, bonfire vip, serial killa, dimension uk skrill rmx, hold your colour, many more, massive is all, wicked . the power went out on the stage completely during one of the tunes, we joked that he rocked the stage out of power. power's back and he keeps playing. during the island, the pyrotechnic (according to joe) had to go for a sec, asks me to pull a knob up during the song's drop. i haven't been told off when he came back so i suspect i did things accordingly haha. there were mosh pits all the time in the crowd and some really bangin people in there in general (shouts to the guys with the self made custom hyc shirt of theirs!) crowd chanted along pretty much everything out there and contributed well to the atmosphere. the set finishes a while after, we came off stage back to his quarters and talked for a while again. here we met enikő & emese, two young ladies who visited paul's sets since from about 04-05 and chatted with them as well. paul was a very nice, down to earth personality at the venue, we had some cool casual talks, he talked about the band, roscoe, and about where he's heading next (which was back to his family for now). after all that we took some pictures, greeted each other again and off we went. i'd like to thank [seriously way too many names to list] everybody who helped me stay motivated in the whole pendulum business. this was an experience of a lifetime. this was my first time i had ever attended a dj set as definitely the most wicked night of my life so far. massive thanks to everybody involved... including You! https://www.instagram.com/p/BY-G7JSnSs4/?taken-by=justgreghu
