He Was A Fan Of The Pre-War Mercedes Benz SSK And Sold The Idea Of A “Contemporary Classic” Take On This Car To Studebaker. Studebaker Was The Importer Of Mercedes At This Time. Stevens, Using A Modified Studebaker Daytona Chassis, And In Just Eight Weeks, Built The Prototype Excalibur SS. It Was Quite The Hit At The New York Auto Show. After The Demise Of Studebaker, A Chevrolet Dealer, Worked With Stevens To Build The Car Using A Chevrolet Engine.
